Hi, I’m Mark. In this article, I’m going to show you how to replace the chuck in a DeWalt cordless hammer drill. The chuck could really be considered a normal-wear item on any drill. Each time a drill bit slips under a high-torque situationit will wear the chuck a small amount. And eventually, the chuck will need to be replaced. Interior Decorating Ideas for Modern Décor If the drill is often used in really dirty or dusty conditionsIt’s not uncommon for the chuck to tend to seize-up and not want to open and close easily. Replacing the chuck is easy to do and I’m going to show you how.
Chucks, as well as many other parts, can be found on our website. Let’s get started. We’ll begin by removing the internal set-screw that secures the chuck to the drill. I’ll open up the chuckwide enough to get a screwdriver inside. In this case, it’s a Torx #20. The screw is reverse-thread, so I’ll turn it clockwise to remove the screw. These can be a little stubborn sometimes, because they usually have some Locktite on them.
40 Christmas Decorating Ideas That Will Bring Joy To Your Home The chuck is usually screwed very tightly onto the drill’s spindle. So removing it can be a little bit of a challenge. The easiest way to do it, is to take a large Allen wrenchand chuck it into the drill’s chuck. Then set the gearbox for the lowest gear setting. We’ll then take the drill and strike the Allen wrench with a hammer. When we do that, that will be enough momentum to break the chuck free so we can unscrew it. And there it broke free and I can unscrew it from the drill.
Now I can install the new chuck. I’ll thread it onto the spindle. I’ll open the chuckAnd reinstall the Allen wrench. There’s no need to strike the Allen wrench this time; I’ll just simply hand-tighten it. Now I’ll remove the chuckAnd replace the set screw. I’ll drop it into the chuck, and use my Torx screwdriver to tighten it. And again, it’s reverse-thread, so counterclockwise to tighten.
And that’s how easy it is to replace the chuck on your DeWALT cordless hammer drill.
